What Is an Intensive Outpatient Program?
MWI Health's intensive outpatient program in Sioux Falls provides structured, clinical treatment for substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma, mood disorders, and co-occurring conditions, all without requiring a residential stay. Our IOP is designed for adults who need more than weekly therapy but want to continue living at home and maintaining their responsibilities.
Our program meets 3 days per week, with each session lasting approximately 3 hours. Treatment includes evidence-based group therapy, individual counseling, psychiatric support, relapse prevention, and skill-building workshops led by licensed clinicians.
IOP is appropriate as a step-down from inpatient, residential, or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) care, or as a step-up for individuals who are not making adequate progress with standard outpatient therapy alone. Our clinical team conducts a thorough assessment, including screening for substance use, to determine the right level of care before enrollment.
Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment Right for You?
IOP is not entry-level therapy and it is not inpatient hospitalization. It occupies a clinically significant middle ground, offering the structure and frequency of residential care while you continue living at home, working, and maintaining daily responsibilities.
Our clinical team recommends this intensive outpatient program in Sioux Falls for adults managing a substance use disorder, a mental health condition, or both, who need more contact with a treatment team than once-weekly therapy can provide. It is also a common step-down from a higher level of care, including inpatient hospitalization, residential treatment, or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), allowing patients to continue structured treatment as they transition back to daily life.
If you are unsure whether IOP is the right fit, our admissions team will conduct a free, confidential assessment and recommend the level of care most appropriate for your situation.
You are managing a substance use disorder, including alcohol, opioid, stimulant, or other addiction, on its own or alongside a mental health condition
You are managing depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, or a mood disorder that is affecting your daily life
Weekly outpatient therapy has not provided enough support or your symptoms have worsened
You are stepping down from inpatient, residential, or Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) care and need continued structured support
You want to maintain work, school, or family schedule while receiving structured care
A note on co-occurring care: if you have both a mental health condition and an active substance use disorder, our integrated Dual Diagnosis IOP may offer the most coordinated treatment. Our admissions team will help determine the right track during your assessment.
