Medication Management

If you or a loved one is navigating mental health treatment, you may have questions about medication, and how to take it safely and effectively. At MWI Health, we work with individuals across South Dakota and Iowa to provide personalized medication management that helps make healing possible.

What Is Medication Management?

Medication management is more than just writing a prescription. It’s a guided, ongoing partnership between you and a licensed provider, such as a psychiatrist or psychiatric nurse practitioner, who helps make sure any medications you’re taking are the right fit for you.

This includes:

  • Evaluating your symptoms and medical history
  • Selecting the most appropriate medication
  • Monitoring your progress
  • Adjusting dosage or changing meds as needed

Think of it as a customized treatment plan that grows with you, especially important when it comes to mental health, where every person’s brain and body respond differently.

Your Questions, Answered

How do I know if I'm experiencing depression or just feeling sad?

While sadness is a normal human emotion, clinical depression involves persistent symptoms lasting at least two weeks, including feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest, changes in sleep or appetite, low energy, and difficulty concentrating. If these symptoms are significantly impacting your daily life, it’s advisable to seek a professional evaluation.

The most effective treatment often involves a combination of psychotherapy (like CBT) and medication management. For individuals with moderate to severe or treatment-resistant depression, advanced therapies like Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) or Spravato® can provide significant relief when other options haven’t worked. Your personalized plan will be tailored to your unique needs.

The duration of depression treatment varies for each individual. Some may find relief within a few months of therapy and medication, while others may require ongoing support to manage chronic or recurrent depression. Our goal is to equip you with lasting coping skills and support your journey toward long-term well-being.

While a family history of depression can increase your risk, it’s not a guarantee you will develop it. Depression is often caused by a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors. While not always preventable, understanding risk factors and seeking early intervention can significantly improve outcomes and help manage symptoms effectively.
